The Dog Treaty training
methods are based upon proven scientific methods of
applied behavioral science and a humane, positive
approach. By reinforcing desired behaviors, we increase
the likelihood that they will be repeated. We use the
clicker to mark these behaviors. It not only works but
it's fun for you and for your dog. In the process of
building behaviors, you build a sound relationship with
your dog.
Behaviors that are rewarded are repeated.
This is true for us and this is true for our dogs. Positive reinforcement works. We can change the behaviors that we don’t want by reinforcing the ones that we do want and ignoring those that we don't want (or by training an incompatible behavior). That means instead of focusing on what we don’t want and using aversive methods for stopping the behavior (with negative fallout that can often result), we can reward the behavior that we do want to train this as an appropriate substitute for the unwanted behavior.
It’s a shift in dog training paradigms from “traditional” correction based methods, but not for trainers working with different species who long ago learned that it’s difficult to use force with animals larger than us or put a choke chain on a dolphin. Rather, with the use of a marker (a whistle for a dolphin, a clicker for a dog) we have a tool to communicate to our dog the exact moment that he did the behavior that we want that will provide a reward. It helps us shape our dog’s behavior and the dog learns what is wanted (and reinforcing). It’s a form of communication that is effective, consistent, and rewarding.
